Position Summary

Activate is now supporting fellows in both Berkeley and Boston and seeks a Partnerships, Outreach & Marketing Intern to join the team and execute on our 2020 Strategic Recruitment Plan. This position will play a key role in ensuring we reach the greatest pool of potential applicants while also growing awareness about our program and impact among a wide range of potential allies, stakeholders, and funders.

The Partnerships, Outreach & Marketing Intern will work directly with the Partnership Manager to execute a strategic plan to attract, inform, and engage potential fellows. The position is full-time, paid, and remote (US-based). The preferred start date is early June, with internship duration lasting 2-3 months. This position will report to the Partnership Manager. 

Primary Responsibilities

  • Develop a Higher Education Engagement Strategy to systematically engage key contacts across higher education institutions and disseminate information about Activate fellowships to potential applicants.

  • Work with the Partnerships Manager to improve upon and execute the broader Activate 2020 Recruitment Strategy.

  • Support efforts to increase the diversity of the fellow applicant pool, including reaching and recruiting underrepresented applicants.

  • Drive outreach to policy, business and technology experts working in science innovation. 

  • Maintain and grow a database of key contacts from innovation hubs, academia, industry and more.

  • Collaborate with recruitment & communication teams to craft and hone recruitment messaging and experiment with/evaluate messaging effectiveness.

  • Work closely with the fellowship, partnerships, and communications teams to execute recruitment strategy and timeline. 


Preferred Skills and Experience

  • Background in outreach and marketing

  • Clear and effective writer and speaker

  • Data management, tracking, and analytics skills

  • Proficiency with social media and metric analysis

  • Technologically savvy with competence in G-Suite, Google Drive, and CRMs/databases

  • International experience and intercultural sensitivity is a bonus

  • Interest and background in science innovation, climate, microelectronics or entrepreneurship is a bonus

  • is a team player able to accomplish tasks independently

  • has a strong understanding of the US academic system, particularly as relates to research, graduate and Ph.D. programs

  • has an interest in innovation, clean energy, manufacturing or advanced electronics sectors (or willingness to learn)

  • believes the world's scientific and entrepreneurial talent should be focused on more serious pursuits than dog-walking apps

  • understands that innovation starts with people, not ideas

  • is preferably based in the Bay Area, CA or Boston, MA, with an understanding of local academic and entrepreneurial ecosystems
