About Insight Garden Program (IGP)

IGP facilitates an innovative curriculum combined with vocational gardening and landscaping training so that people in prison can reconnect to self, community, and the natural world. This “inner” and “outer” gardening approach transforms lives, ends ongoing cycles of incarceration, and creates safer communities. Our program is currently running in eleven prisons in the state of California. For more information, see are seeking a part-time (unpaid) Communications intern (5-10 hours a week) to help us increase our online presence, manage social media accounts, and create/edit/curate IGP curriculum videos that will be shared with incarcerated participants and in the community. 

The Opportunity:

We are looking for someone with interest and experience in communications, writing, video editing, copy editing, marketing, and social media. This person should have a strong track record for using online communications and a wellspring of passion, curiosity, and creativity. Our ideal candidate will have a high degree of initiative, self-direction, and an interest in environmental justice, permaculture gardening, and prison reform issues.

Intern Responsibilities:

  1. Gain familiarity with organizational mission, purpose and goals
  2. Learn to capture IGP's voice and style
  3. Manage IGP's social media accounts including Instagram and Facebook and Twitter
  4. Engage directly through email and on social media platforms with audience members and other members of the IGP Community
  5. Collect, edit and curate video clips about IGP's program and gardening in collaboration with IGP staff


This is an unpaid position, however, we are open to collaborating with academic institutions to apply for academic credit. 

This is an exciting opportunity to help us build a platform highlighting the intersections of environmental, social and criminal justice. You will also collaborate closely with staff in all areas of our organization and learn firsthand what is at the heart of our healing and transformative program.
