About the role: 

Cruise is looking for a talented Hardware in the Loop (HiL) Design Engineer to work with our hardware team to bring focus on building an automated test system to accelerate hardware development. In this position you will partner with Embedded Systems, Hardware teams, and Electrical Engineering teams to identify architecture and testing needs. And work with these teams to design, document, build automated test systems and lead the work from start to finish. This is a unique opportunity to own and define how the embedded systems of an autonomous vehicle are tested and what it takes to get the driver out of the vehicle, safely and at scale. 

Day-to-day responsibilities include: 

  • Architect, design and implement scripting and infrastructure for automation test to meet hardware bringup and test needs 
  • Build and maintain simulation infrastructure for embedded software 
  • Help develop/execute testing hardware and software for in house hardware projects, sensor characterization, calibration and test for the gamut of R&D through mass production hardware 
  • Communicate requirements and coordinate execution with multiple teams 
  • Troubleshoot and root cause, document, develop tests for known failure cases, and drive issues to closure 
  • Define testing and verification plans for the embedded software that enable Cruise vehicle 
  • Drive software test engineering best practices within your team 
  • Help define, build, and embody Cruise engineering culture and principles 

You should apply for this role if you have the following qualifications: 

  • 4+ years experience managing teams who have shipped and support scalable production systems 
  • Test-minded; has a unique ability to break things 
  • Experience defining test automation strategies and driving its execution 
  • Extensive experience building test plans, regression testing, and root cause analysis 
  • Effective interpersonal, leadership, and communication skills 
  • Bachelor's degree in engineering or equivalent real world experience 

Bonus points! 

  • Experience building HiL Systems from the ground up 
  • Experience with Python 
  • Experience with embedded Linux systems
