Activate fellows have launched over 50 startups that have set world records, defined new market categories, and raised over $150M in development funding. Activate supports fellows in Berkeley, CA and Cambridge, MA, with plans to expand to additional locations. 

Position Summary

The Marketing and Communications Director will lead strategy and execution of all Activate marketing and communications activities. This person will lead annual communications planning, guiding Activate’s long-term marketing strategy. This role is also tactical, with daily management tasks and ongoing collaboration with colleagues in other functional teams to ensure narrative consistency and impact across the organization.  

The Marketing and Communications Director will be hired as a full­ time employee of Activate Global, Inc. with competitive salary and full benefits. This person will report to the Chief Brand Officer and work closely with the Editorial Director and Creative Director. Activate is a small but growing organization, team members must be comfortable in an entrepreneurial, start-up culture.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Develop organization-wide marketing strategy, aligned with broader organizational goals for successful fellow recruitment, revenue generation, network engagement, and partnerships. Includes annual planning and setting longer term vision

  • Set and execute content strategy for Activate communications channels including the website, audience-specific newsletters, blog, and social media

  • Project management for marketing content and brand collateral

  • Build and maintain relationships with communications counterparts at stakeholder institutions, including partners, and sponsors

  • Establish strong relationships with other functional teams, helping to assess their marketing needs, serving inbound requests, and supporting the execution of associated campaigns

  • Track and goal-set audience engagement metrics across platforms and campaigns, to track impact and adjust strategy

The Ideal Candidate...

  • Has 7+ years experience as a marketing or communications professional

  • Is an expert and proactive with digital marketing tools, platforms, and audience engagement approaches

  • Has demonstrated experience managing designers (print and web) and copywriters in development of marketing collateral consistent with brand guidelines

  • Is an effective storyteller who can compel audiences—with different vocabularies, motivations, and sensitivities—to action

  • Has proven their ability to maintain brand consistency across various media

  • Is an expert and proactive with digital marketing tools, platforms, and audience engagement approaches

  • Is familiar with—or a voracious appetite to learn about—hard technology innovation and its many players, from startups, to research institutions, to industry and government

  • Is a strategic thinker who gets excited about big ideas and knows how to make them actionable

  • Has a keen interest in innovation, clean energy, manufacturing or advanced electronics sectors (or willingness to learn)

  • Believes the world's scientific and entrepreneurial talent should be focused on more serious pursuits than dog-walking apps

  • Is preferably based in the Bay Area, CA or Boston, MA, with an understanding of local academic and tech/entrepreneurial ecosystems
