Job Description

Upstream Tech is a technology company that uses satellites and machine learning to help organizations manage and monitor natural resources. We are growing quickly and building out our business development team that connects partner organizations and customers to our services.

Specifically, we are looking for a talented team member to help expand the reach and impact of our Lens work to enable informed conservation decision-making.

You will wear many hats in this role: identifying leads, presenting to prospective customers in sales meetings, serving as a liaison with the engineering team as we grow the product, supporting marketing efforts and exploring new markets through which we can maximize global impact.

The right candidate is driven by our mission, has experience in or a working knowledge of land and water conservation, should demonstrate excellent independent work ethic, and a desire to work closely with a driven, remote team.

This individual will support the Growth and Partnerships (G&P) team to drive the sales and growth of one of our key products, Lens. In the short term, this role will focus primarily on current markets for Lens including land trusts, conservation organizations, and wetland mitigation banks, and will also support growth and expansion to serve new markets.

Sales and business development:

  • Generate ongoing pipeline of potential customers for Lens.
  • Qualify leads, conduct outreach, and lead introductory demo meetings.
  • Develop and deliver proposals.
  • Represent Upstream Tech at conferences and lead webinars to educate new audiences on remote monitoring.
  • Conduct market research into new markets and applications for Lens, and develop and share understanding of customer needs and user stories for new applications.

  • Develop and maintain marketing materials, including written materials, short demo videos, blog posts, social media content, webinar and presentation slides, etc.
  • Identify and pursue speaking opportunities for the Upstream Tech team.

You’d be a good fit if

  • You want to work at a small, impact-oriented company. We measure our success with a triple bottom line and put our principles before profits.
  • You're pragmatic and want to get things done without sacrificing quality.
  • You're humble, empathetic, and understand that giving and receiving honest direct feedback helps everyone to grow.
  • You’re a self-starter and able to manage your own time effectively and efficiently.
  • You’re a great communicator, and can speak to a range of stakeholders with varying familiarity with technology.

Preferred qualifications

  • Undergraduate degree in a relevant field (e.g.,. business, environmental management, data science, engineering, energy); master’s degree preferred
  • 2-7 years work experience in sales and business development.
  • Industry knowledge or experience around land and water conservation; ideally specifically around land trusts or wetland mitigation banks.
  • Experience with and comfort working with technology applications, ideally remote sensing and geospatial technology.
  • Located in the United States.

We are proud to offer great benefits like 4 weeks of paid vacation and good health, dental, vision, and life insurance plans. We want our team to live full lives outside of work.

Remote. We conduct business using technologies like Slack and video conferencing. We do a biannual in-person trip to work, bond, and celebrate our successes.

Travel. While Upstream Tech is currently not traveling to conferences and sales meetings, and we try to minimize our carbon footprint from air travel, we are looking for someone with flexibility to travel ~10% of the time in the future on an as-needed basis.

How to apply

If interested, please provide your resume detailing your experience as well as a cover letter to by August 16, 2020. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis.
