Check out the job opening and requirements below: The Principal Scientist is a new and critical role at Impossible Foods which sits within the R&D Downstream Isolation team. You will build and lead a new group that is responsible for evaluating the quality of our heme ingredient. Your group will ensure that our heme ingredient meets all quality and shelf life requirements as we continue to optimize and scale our manufacturing process. You will own and manage any SKU-specific heme formulation changes and advise on testing methodology, experimental design and data analysis. You will identify and spearhead heme product quality improvements such as shelf life extension. You will collaborate very closely with other heme teams such as Strain Development, Fermentation, Engineering and Analytics as well as the end user Product teams. You will work with corporate Quality to support root cause analysis on any out of spec heme product and Regulatory to provide all heme product data required for regulatory filings. You are a technically savvy, scientifically curious, and motivated leader who knows the ins and outs of shared services in the quality and product development world. Build out a platform to characterize, understand and control the quality of IF’s heme product.
Coordinate testing of all heme samples from research and process development trials.
Collaborate with corporate Quality to manage testing samples from heme manufacturing.
Develop heme formulation changes that result in targeted heme product quality improvements.
Design experiments to answer conceptual questions.
Determine the molecular mechanisms that drive changes in heme ingredient quality.
Identify, develop, and implement a wide range of analytical test methods for monitoring process stability and final product quality.
Develop new systems to track testing programs and streamline data analysis.
Build a shelf life program for frozen and refrigerated heme including monitoring of physical properties, color, sensory and microbiological content.
Identify and liaise with external testing labs for evaluation of product quality, safety, and stability.
Support root cause analysis on out of spec heme product.
Provide heme quality documentation for regulatory filings.
Ph.D in Chemical Engineering, Food Science, Biochemistry, Microbiology or a related field.
8+ years of relevant industry experience.
2+ years of managing small to medium size teams including direct supervision of personnel.
A strong scientific mind and passion for scientific rigor.
Experience with project management is required. Product life cycle management and/or management of change is a plus.
Direct experience with product formulation in the Food or Pharmaceutical industries.
Experience scaling up food products including bench, pilot, and plant scale testing is a plus.
Experienced with complex data analysis and interpretation.
Must have proven track record of applying organizational rigor, documentation, and processes.
Self-starter attitude who is naturally curious and enjoys working in a fast-paced environment.
