At C16 Biosciences, we believe that palm oil doesn’t have to be a problem. Our team is building a sustainable and environmentally-friendly alternative to “conflict palm oil,” which relies on tropical rainforest deforestation and emits over 1 billion tons of CO2 into the atmosphere every year. C16 Bio’s technology platform harnesses naturally-occurring biological processes, improved by the latest innovations in strain engineering, fermentation, and low-cost lipid extraction to produce a better kind of palm oil. C16 Biosciences is looking for a Research Associate who has a passion for microbial fermentation (yeast, fungi, and bacteria) and is excited to be part of the development, scaling, and commercialization of sustainable palm oil alternatives. The key activities of the role include strain selection and benchmarking, substrate and feedstock evaluation, media development and optimization, as well as downstream processing (biomass recovery, drying, cell disruption, lipid extraction, etc.) Candidates for this position should possess a BS degree and excellent communication, documentation, and time management skills.
Support our fermentation R&D team with strain benchmarking, substrate and feedstock evaluation, media development and optimization in shake flasks and lab-scale bioreactors (2L).
Support the fermentation team with media preparation & sterilization, fermentation system setup, sampling, and harvesting.
Operate HPLC protocols for the analysis of carbon and metabolites during fermentation.
Execute centrifugation, vacuum drying, cell disruption, and solvent extraction protocols for lipid production from microbial biomass.
Move equipment and media up to 30 pounds while assisting with fermentation set-up and operation.
Document and present lab operations and experimental data.
Perform routine tasks with moderate to limited degree of supervision.
Perform duties according to established SOPs and company safety procedures.
BS degree in Chemical Engineering, Biological Engineering, Microbiology, or a related field.
Hands-on experience with microbial cell culture in shake flasks (100mL - 3L) and auto-controlled bioreactors (1L-5L).
Flexible and willing to work occasional weekends as needed.
Current valid US work authorization.
Additional Preferred Qualifications
Experience with analytical equipment, including HPLC, UV-VIS, and GC-MS.
Experience with processes including TLC, centrifugation, and solvent extraction.
1 or more years of experience in an industrial or commercial biotechnology setting.
