Job Description

About Nautilus.

Nautilus is building artificial intelligence to advance the efficiency of ocean commerce. We deliver technology to help shipping companies minimize fuel consumption, maximize operational efficiency, and optimize fleet performance. By arming ship owners and operators with real-time predictive decision support, Nautilus is reducing greenhouse gas emissions and making global trade sustainable.

Ocean shipping consumes over $100 billion dollars of fuel every year, and up to 30% of it can be saved. For owner-operators, reliance on manually collected and analyzed data makes it difficult to optimize fleet performance in real-time. By providing a unified data platform that leverages machine learning, Nautilus helps its clients make better decisions to maximize the return on each ship and every voyage. For our clients, this means they drive closer collaboration, greater transparency, and stronger accountability across their global teams every day.

About you.

Nautilus Labs is looking for a Dev-Ops Engineering Manager to join our team. You are a product-oriented problem solver and an execution-focussed leader capable of mentoring a team.  You are a hands on technical trend-setter with experience implementing, testing and supporting software infrastructure end-to-end from conception through to production release. You have a background in engineering, computer science, or other related technical field. You have experience designing and developing sophisticated production solutions using state-of-the-art technologies. You have experience working intimately with Cloud Architecture, Info-Sec standards, AWS, Docker, postgreSQL, Kubernetes, and CICD automation.  You are a strong communicator and able to collaborate effectively with colleagues across the organization.

Outcomes for this role.

You will work closely with software engineers and the operations team to build, test, and deploy software solutions. You will partner with our operations team to comply with information and security standards and ensure that we have the appropriate checks and balances in place for operational efficiency and risk mitigation:  eg. encryption protocols in transit and at rest, GDPR compliance, SOC2, Cloud identity management, credentials orchestration, deployment orchestration, CICD, alerting, monitoring and incident management. While we are a collaborative team, you will be expected to take independent ownership of specific initiatives.  The production infrastructure is among the most critical concerns at Nautilus and any improvements to this initiative will be felt across the entire Nautilus Team and our customer base.

In this role you will:

  • Manage an engineering team who will report to you
  • Lead design, implement, test, and maintain Nautilus’s Production (and other environments) infrastructure
  • Work with engineers to develop a CICD pipeline
  • Work with engineers to develop a comprehensive monitoring dashboard and associated alerting as part of an incident management program
  • Establish and implement a compliance plan for SOC2
  • Establish necessary security protocols around encryption, credentials management, pen testing, etc.
  • Take ownership of deployed services - eg. databases, caches, production servers, etc.
  • Collaborate with engineers on the design and implementation of exposed APIs, code repositories, etc.
  • Work closely with the operations team to administer credentials for third party SAAS services
  • Establish an efficient and secure onboarding and offboarding protocol for any arriving and departing Nautilus employees.
  • Set up, support and manage search engine databases (Elasticsearch, Lucene, etc) and optimize them using as relevance tuning, boosting, and other optimization techniques
  • Manage the release process of new code
  • Leverage strong debugging, problem solving, and investigative skills with the ability to assimilate disparate information (log files, error messages, etc.) and pursue leads to find root cause problems
  • Work closely with the post-launch Operations team to ensure post-launch client success
  • Implement tooling to assist in the development process, eg. logging libraries, instrumentation, analytics, etc.
  • 8+ years of professional experience with a background in software development and dev-ops
  • Strong analytical skills and knowledge of the full SDLC and CICD
  • Experience with programming multiple languages
  • Established experience in (but not limited to), for example, AWS, Docker, SQL and NoSQL databases, Kubernetes, CICD automation, etc.
  • Collaborative with strong communication skills.
  • Experience developing secure code; Cloud Security Fundamentals, including access control management, identity and access management, encryptions, and cryptography
