OVERVIEW
The Innovation team is seeking an outstanding individual to join Beyond Meat for extrusion research at the company’s headquarters in El Segundo, CA. The candidate will be a resident expert for extrusion and effect innovative extrusion technologies working with the team and operators. This position comprises primary responsibility for food extrusion-based process and product development from the initial concept through final commercialization phases. The ideal candidate has excellent scientific, analytical, strategic, and skills for development of engineering processes in an innovative food company, and an excellent record of impactful contributions to the extrusion field.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Construct and execute bench top, pilot plant, experiments/trials, either individually or as a member of a team, consult and collaborate with production facilities for commercial scale trials
  • Work as an R&D team member with responsibility for conceptualizing and affecting extrusion manufacturing ideas and creating processes
  • Responsible for designing and running extrusion experiments, manufacturing processes and extrusion-based technology development
  • Assist in identification and creation of extrusion technology including new die designs
  • Comprehend and apply principles of the scale up of unit operations common within the food industry
  • Leverage both internal and external resources to identify and analyze problems, identify potential solutions, carry out tests, foresee consequences of proposed actions, and implement recommendations in the achievement of team and project goals
  • Develop a close functional relationship with team members to review projects, contribute information, and provide suggestions regarding product-processing and product development work
  • Maintain accurate and complete records of all experimental and design work
  • Define processing core competencies in terms of playbooks, white papers, or other forms of knowledge capture and execute technology transfer to pilot and manufacturing facilities where appropriate
  • Troubleshooting throughput for extruders and improving yield
  • Be a resident expert for extrusion and share information on extrusion with the team and operators
  • Engage in cross-functional collaborations within the Innovation team to inform extrusion-directed product development and goals; actively engage in stage-gate processes
  • Understand and comply with all relevant food and safety regulations in pilot and food manufacturing environments

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Graduate degree in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Process Engineering, Food Science
  • Experience in food industry preferred. Significant experience in extrusion required
  • Knowledge of unit operations and processing equipment
  • Strong communication and presentation skills
  • Capable of responding quickly to evolving priorities and comfortable dealing with ambiguity in a fast-moving environment
  • Detail-oriented, extremely organized, and able to coordinate multiple tasks in a timely manner, with minimal supervision
  • Highly-organized and self-starting work style
  • Team player and flexible
  • In-depth understanding of mechanical and electrical components of an extruder
  • Good documentation and organizational skills and practices/project management skills
  • Disciplined with high attention to details
  • Strong analytical and creative thinking skills
  • Excellent time management skills
  • Communicate and collaborate effectively with internal and external customers, collaborators, and strategic partners
  • Works well in a diverse team environment with minimal supervision

SPECIALIZED KNOWLEDGE

  • Knowledge/experience with extruders, ideally in a food/beverage manufacturing facility

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • May require lifting items up to 50 lbs. and production floor duties

WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • The work setting involves an office, warehouse, and production areas
