Job Description

Chief Executive Officer
Cornea is seeking an executive officer with a track record leading organizations that ship great products. As the CEO, you will immediately build new and deploy existing products in the wildland fire management space, secure meaningful clients and contracts, and quickly grow margins as the company looks to expand into additional disaster spaces.

About Cornea
Cornea is a data service for disaster planning, response, and recovery; providing onsite support to incident management teams at major national and international disasters. Cornea’s software platform ingests, secures, and displays relevant information to determine where response assets and preventative measures should be concentrated to maximize safety and effectiveness.

This is a multibillion-dollar opportunity, of which Cornea is trying to capture a significant portion of the $5 billion spent nationally on wildland fire suppression. In California alone, the State government has allocated $2.5 billion per year in fire prevention and response activities. In addition, Cornea aims to capture a large percentage of the broader $130 billion U.S. spend on natural disasters such as hurricanes, tornadoes, and flooding.

Cornea was incubated by Hangar, a firm that funds and builds technology companies tackling public sector market challenges.

What your first six months will look like
Within the first three months, you’ll work with Cornea’s founding team to obtain contracts with our first customers and continue to build out the products underway. You’ll take ownership of the product vision and roadmap, work to develop subject-matter expertise, and set a path for growth. You’ll be hands on in the day-to-day prioritization of product and engineering efforts, executing on marketing and sales, and building out the Cornea brand.

In the next three months, you’ll be shipping new features and, ideally, new products aimed at expanding the public-sector market and into new verticals or natural disaster domains. You’ll be delivering for existing customers and continuing to scale.

We are looking for a CEO who understands the importance of developing and delivering exceptional products and building a culture of design, engineering, and research excellence. We are not looking for a technical founder, but we expect the CEO to understand the tradeoffs associated with software development and practices to enable a tech company to succeed. We also expect great CEOs to know their strengths, and where to delegate appropriately:

  • Lead team to discover and solidify strong product-market-fit through impeccable user-research and customer engagement
  • Clearly communicate technical and product vision – including opportunities and roadblocks – to investment team, company, and customers at large

Strategy and Operations:

  • Determine a clear business model and manage business development, expansion, and growth to reach annual recurring revenue of at least $25M
  • Oversee development and management of P&L and cash flow, managing burn rate

Sales and Marketing:

  • Oversee the development of customer acquisition and sales processes
  • Manage client relationships, working closely with prospective and existing clients, to continually integrate user feedback into product offerings
  • Build and maintain relationships with industry stakeholders, including private sector and government partners
  • Serve as brand evangelist and external representation to investors and press

About You
You are empathic, aware, and intrinsically motivated towards genuine impact.
You have a strong track record leading teams that deliver technical products – either through product, engineering, sales, or executive capacities. You execute, find product market fit, and can earn revenue for an early stage company. You want to build a company that uses data and subject-matter expertise to  address the next generation of climate-based natural disasters, and have the capability to do so.

Although there are many traits a CEO should possess, Cornea’s work would benefit from someone with the following:

  • Deep experience leading, building, and launching successful, early stage products
  • Ability to attract and hire diverse and talented teams
  • Experience in leadership and management capacities, ideally within fast-growing organizations or business units, to generate positive returns
  • Experience with R&D in fire science, operations research, machine learning, or other emergent technologies
  • Experience working with the disaster response community and a detailed understanding of the interagency dynamics involved in incident management
  • Knowledge working with government is attractive, but not required

Cornea is an equal opportunity employer. We respect and seek to empower each individual and support diverse cultures, perspectives, skills, and experiences within our workforce.
