About This Role

Apeel has developed proprietary formulations and application equipment to process fresh produce on a commercial scale both domestically and internationally. We're currently looking for a Senior Robotics Engineer to join the growing Engineering team. The Senior Robotics Engineer will be responsible for leading the team’s efforts to implement robotics and automation across various key components of the Apeel application system. Apeel is looking for someone who can effectively understand the opportunities and challenges for technical success in new environments and facilities, including customized design solutions for specific customers. This role will require up to 15-20% travel to our domestic and international locations.

What You’ll Do

  • Lead the design and implementation of robotics and automation solutions across the range of Apeel application equipment
  • Work to identify opportunities to retrofit existing field deployed equipment with automation solutions to improve performance and efficiency
  • Work with the larger Engineering team to develop Apeel’s larger equipment automation architecture plan, bridging current state to future state
  • Work with third-party equipment vendors, where necessary on the design of hardware to meet Apeel robotics and automation specifications
  • Specify and program HMIs to provide the needed equipment functionality and control
  • Generate block diagrams, controls schematics, and other engineering documentation as needed for the fabrication, testing and release of key components and the overall control system design
  • Design and implement equipment and process improvements
  • Build initial proof of concept / prototype systems
  • Generate and carry out performance validation test plans for new designs
  • Work with appropriate test agencies to confirm designs meet needed regulatory approvals
  • Collect and analyze performance data from equipment and automated processes to evaluate performance and identify opportunities for improvement
  • Proactively manage reliability and performance risk mitigation tasks, to ensure the long-term reliability of designed systems
  • Ensure all design are completed and implemented following appropriate codes and standards
  • Write technical reports, present design and test results during Apeel’s technical forums

What You Bring

  • BS degree required, MS degree preferred in Robotics, Industrial Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or similar
  • Minimum 10 years of hands-on experience designing and implementing robotics and automation systems
  • Experience working with PLCs, HMIs, and equipment from several industrial automation controls companies
  • Experience working with and designing agriculture / food processing equipment or similar industrial machinery 
  • Experience working with equipment in a cGMP pharmaceutical or food processing environment
  • Experience working with third party design and fabrication firms on the development, testing and acceptance of new equipment
  • Experience implementing robotics solutions for small part handling or manufacturing type environments
  • Expertise with both the hardware and software components needed for robotics and automation equipment
  • Programming experience in C++ and Python
  • Experience taking a design from concept through prototype to production
  • Hands-on experience with the assembly, testing, and troubleshooting of electro-mechanical systems
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics
  • Experience with the testing and certification of new designs to meet regulatory compliance requirements (UL & CE)
  • Experience working with component suppliers to identify, validate and source key components
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Self-directed but also works effectively and professionally with cross functional teams to achieve common Company goals
  • Highly creative and resourceful individual. Experienced with performing complex root cause and corrective actions analysis
