Blue Carbon Services is a small but dynamic New Zealand-based research and development organisation focusing upon seaweed aquaculture as a powerful tool for climate change mitigation. We are currently implementing a three-year research program, together with Auckland and Otago universities, studying the environmental and economic benefits of integrating kelp with Greenshell mussel farming. We are developing our capacity to produce sporophytes of Macrocystis and Ecklonia species for transplantation to mussel farms. We are also studying kelp-mussel mutualism including nutrient exchange and and water de-acidification.
We currently have two more research funding proposals; (i) Quantifying Kelp Carbon Sequestration in Deep Ocean Sediments and (ii) Integrating kelp and mussels into salmon aquaculture.
We require one or two volunteer website developers to improve the capacity of our website (https://bluecarbon.co.nz) to effectively communicate our research findings with the wider public, and generate interest from those wishing to invest in kelp-based climate change mitigation and ocean regeneration.
